smartDESIGN (SD) worked with the Mancuso Business Development Group (MBDG) and the City of Batavia to apply for a RestoreNY grant to improve access and stimulate further development at the Batavia Industrial Center (BIC). The project was awarded a $1.5 million grant in 2009.

SD developed the concept for extending a dead-end city street into the heart of the BIC. In order to do this, 38,000 SF of dilapidated industrial buildings were demolished to create sufficient open space. 

The demo area was rehabilitated to include the new street, green space, underground utilities, pedestrian and vehicular access, and parking. New facades were constructed for the remaining buildings in the project area establishing a modern image with an industrial heritage.
